Our Mission

STARS-igy6 is a non-profit organization 501(c)(3) that will set struggling veterans up for success when transitioning out of the military and also for veterans needing a fresh start and/or are homeless. Many servicemen and women join the military right out of high school, expecting to make it a career. However, life sometimes throws us curveballs. Whatever the reasoning, whether it be because of injuries, family issues, or even just not wanting to be “in” anymore, transitioning from military service back to civilian life can be extremely challenging. It’s not just a career change, it’s a lifestyle change. You go from having a set position, mission, and purpose, to essentially an average Joe that is at the lowest rung on the totem pole of society. Going from SSG Doe to John and losing that title and the respect that comes with it, creates a sense of loss of identity. Getting discharged is also difficult because you are no longer with a large group of like-minded people that all have the same goal. Now, you have to deal with the majority of the population that thinks drastically different than you. After being told for years, where to be, what to eat, what to wear, and what you must do, the “simplest” of decisions (i.e. choosing what to wear) can be hard and lead to “decision fatigue”. Many veterans also struggle with mental health issues, such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression, making the transition even more complex. The loss of purpose and loss of identity is overwhelming and at times, crippling. Hence, why we have such high statistics of alcoholism, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.

STARS-igy6 will be a multifaceted program, supporting veterans for 3 months to 3 years. The main focus being on bettering yourself to create the best life possible. We will hold classes to teach the veteran various life skills to improve their self-reliance and independence. Classes and well-being activities will include finance/budgeting/investing, cooking, VSO/VAC for benefits, woodworking, automotives, resume’ writing, college search/VRE, group therapy, addiction treatment support, equine therapy, massage therapy, shooting range, livestock care, simple home economics (sewing, basic plumbing, etc.) and gardening. Most or all of the instructors are veterans themselves prepared to donate their time in support of STARS-igy6.
